Stephen Blundell for Shipley ward
Local member Stephen Blundell will be standing for Labour in Shipley on 2nd May 2019. Stephen says:
“I have worked in social housing in Bradford and Leeds for over 20 years and I have seen first-hand the terrible impact that the Conservative austerity policies are having on people. We can all see the strain in health, education, policing, transport and other public services that is resulting from government cuts.
I was motivated to stand as a candidate because of the damage I have seen done in my community, and because there are so many people in Shipley who are determined to protect what is great about the town and ensure that vulnerable people are not left behind. The success of the recent community campaign to protect Northcliffe Park is a good example of this, and I am proud that I was able to support and assist the campaign from the outset.
Like many, I am fed up with negativity in local and national politics. To make change happen, I believe that we need to really listen, and earn trust by working on things that are important to people. In my work, I have spent many years helping individuals and communities to solve problems, helping to find ways of working together to make things better. I believe that these are the most important skills for a Councillor to have.
I believe Shipley has lost out in the past because our local representatives haven’t had a strong enough voice on the Council. We started to change that last year when we elected Vick Jenkins as our Labour councillor. I intend to build on that success. I will work with Vick to make sure that our community’s voice is properly heard and better influences the decisions that are made in City Hall.”
