Local Elections 2021
The local elections will be held on the Thursday 6th May 2021
Our selected candidates are:

Alex Ross-Shaw – Windhill and Wrose
In addition to dealing with casework, as a local councillor Alex has led on a number of projects across the ward, including The Big Plant, where over 7,000 trees were planted off Carr Lane and Wrose Brow in West Royd and the wildflower meadow planted at the top of Carr Lane.As Chair of the Parish Council Alex delivered the first ever Wrose Christmas lights display on Wrose Road, with plans to expand it next year.On the Council Alex has previously served as the Armed Forces Champion and on the board of Bradford Credit Union.
Since 2016 Alex has been the Portfolio Holder for Regeneration, Planning and Transport, and is the political lead on a number of high profile projects across the district. These include the planned refurbishment of the former Odeon building to become Bradford Live, operated by the NEC Group and due to open in 2022 and the Shipley Towns Fund, drawing down up to £25m to invest across Shipley to support jobs growth and the town centre.

Marcus Dearden – Bingley
Marcus was born in Bingley and still live in the Ward with his family. Together with his wife Anne, he runs the Five Rise Locks Cafe.
He served as Vice Chair of Bingley Town Council 2016-2019 and is passionate about what needs to be done to improve the Town. Prior to owning the cafe, Marcus worked in the print industry and was an active Trade Unionist.
As Co-chair of Bingley Pool he is leading the Community Asset Transfer, he also Chairs the Bingley Remembrance Day Parade and is a Member of the Bingley Partnership and Chamber of Trade. As a community activist he is involved with the Canal Festival, Greenhill Action Group, Litter Pick Ups, tree planting and emergency flood responses.

Aleem Bashir – Shipley
A seasoned activist. Aleem’s journey into politics began by representing students at the University of Bradford and he has never looked back.
He has campaigned across the Bradford district leading lobbying of Barclays to divest from fossil fuel industries, encouraging community members to get vaccinated, supporting the eviction resistance campaign for tenants who have lost their incomes as well community initiatives such as Bonfire Night street walks to reduce anti social behaviour.

Peter Ashton – Baildon
A Baildon resident since 1983, Peter has been a school governor of four local schools, chairing one for nine years and Chair of both Baildon Town Council and the Baildon Carnival Committee.
A volunteer at Bracken Hall Countryside Centre, he has also been
distributing food during the Covid 19 pandemic.

Abdul Malik – Bingley Rural

for the last six years. After serving in the
army, he worked in retail before joining the
iconic British fashion brand Burberry. He will
bring his experience of campaigning and
helping local people and is scathing of local
Conservatives’ proposals to merge Shipley and
Keighley constituencies to create a new
council. “What people don’t realise is that a
new council formed this way would lead to
less local accountability as the local town and parish council could be abolished”

focused on environmental issues and a
founding member of Climate Action

damage as a result, but the climate crisis is
still with us and the Conservative
Government is falling behind on the urgent actions that are necessary”

Brandon Henderson – Bingley Rural
Brandon is from a working class family, born and raised in and around the Bradford East area.
He is passionate about giving Bingley Rural the strong Labour voice it needs at the council, and working to protect the vital local services that have been hammered by Conservative cuts.
Brandon believes that we desperately need to improve the prospects of the local area, from delivering a world class publicly-owned bus network, and aiding our recovery from the pandemic.
